A MUGA, or multi-use games area, is a single enclosed sports surface designed to host several different activities. Instead of separate spaces for football, netball and basketball, one well-planned area does the job of all three, which makes it one of the most efficient uses of outdoor space a school, club or community can make.
What can you play on a MUGA?
Most MUGAs are line-marked for a mix of sports. Football and netball are the most common, with basketball, hockey and general PE close behind. Because the markings sit on the same surface, a lunchtime football game, an after-school netball session and a weekend club booking can all happen in the same place.
Why artificial grass?
An artificial grass surface keeps the space playable all year round. There is no mud after a wet week, no worn goalmouths and no need to mow, re-seed or repaint lines. It is softer underfoot than a hard court and gives a consistent playing surface from corner to corner, which matters when the same area is used by every year group.
What goes into a good MUGA?
- The right surface for the sports you play most and the level of use you expect.
- A properly prepared base, so the surface drains well and stays level.
- Clear line markings planned around your timetable and your clubs.
- A maintenance plan, so it keeps looking and playing like new.
Is a MUGA right for your site?
If your grass field is out of action for part of the year, or your playground is used for more activities than it was designed for, a MUGA is usually worth exploring. A free site survey is the easiest way to find out what will fit, how it could be phased and what it would cost.
